Here are two letters from Barney, written to me (DavidWills) the first in 1978, and the one with the doggie, 1973.

Nice mention of John Goodvibes (Goodchild) who was at Friends and then went to CA and worked on Rolling Stone. Famously, Goodvibes and a bunch of others nicked all the roadsigns that directed traffic to Bolinas, as part of some kind of anti commodity-tourism thing. Think he plastered his bathroom wall with them…
Hmm thougtht I posted this already once, so excuse the duplication if so.
Yeah, i first met Jon on Oz when I went for an interview for Oz12 sometime in august ’67, I worked with him at Rolling Stone and Straight Arrow Press in San Francisco.
There are no signs directing traffic in Bolinas to this day.
Bolinas is 30 miles north of San francisco, different geology, on the other side of the San Andreas Fault line, and moving a thumbnail a year Niorth on the Pacific plate, relative to the ‘Frisco plate.
Frisco is ‘low-class’ sailors slang for a whoring town, and so is considered bad-language by many San Francisco matrons of stilted desire.
Like ladbroke Grove in London, Bolinas used to be regarded as an extension of Haight Street, but although the partchouli lingers yet, with strong pockets of resistance, commodification has taken its revenge and the whole nimby-yup scene now tries to normalize all. Alternate newspapers, like theh Beat, the Haight Ashbury Street fairs and the Bolinas and Ladbroke Grove Carnivals help mantain the spirit.
The house Barney mentions in North Devon is where we lived for a year when Aten was a baby, so 1972/73. It was an old gamekeeper’s house. We lived with another couple called Louise and Dave. Dave was a journalist who was involved in Northern Ireland at the time; had been there and lived with the Catholics for a while. By the way, Barney didn’t actually live there, just came to visit now and again and did things to the house, mainly pulling down plaster and making a great mess, then going back to London to get on with his work, leaving us to clean up after him! He loved the idea of living in the country and we went on to buy an old derelict cottage in Co. Mayo. Unfortunately we never got to live in it. Would love to hear from anyone who know me in those days by the way.
When he moved into Leigh Court the first thing he did was pull out the hideous electric-fire, with the excuse, “It was your suggestion.” The gaping brick rubble hole was never fixed.
giana! we lost touch. i am so glad to see your posting. i was in touch with aten a number of years ago and recently emailed him to reconnect. i will ask david how we can exchange email addresses without posting them here. i am full of memories, drawings, journals, photos about and by barney. more soon.
Giana, hi there!… Do you think the drawing of the dog at the top of one of these letters is Hazel, the red setter Barney bought for you? !
Re Jon Goodchild. Jon asked me to do the photography for The YES Album (see link above) while he was in London. I used the payment from it to go to San Frisco where Jon put me up for a while in his home and introduced me to everyone in the Rolling Stone office. A real gent and lovely person!
I remember driving Giana and baby Pog to Devon in an olive green ex-GPO Morris 1000 van. Was it Whistler’s cottage on the Clovely estate or am I confused?
